ECC Press Release - Successful migration of power spot clearing services in Slovenia

Leipzig / Ljubljana, 17 April 2024 – European Commodity Clearing (ECC) and BSP Energy Exchange LLC (BSP) have successfully concluded the migration of clearing services for power spot intraday continuous and day-ahead customers in Slovenia, with over 30 customers already transferred to the ECC systems. ECC will now serve all exchanges of the newly extended Alpine- Adriatic Danube Power Exchange Group (ADEX Group) in the region, including BSP, HUPX, and SEEPEX. Furthermore, ECC’s comprehensive offering also includes market coupling services on four Slovenian bidding zone borders.

Dr Tobias Paulun, CEO of ECC, comments: “We are delighted that with the integration of BSP’s Slovenian power spot clearing services, ECC will have a comprehensive clearing and settlement offering across the European power spot markets, including Central, Eastern and Southeastern Europe. Risk management on power markets is more important than ever and with this step, we will ensure a more integrated service portfolio to our international customer base.”

M.Sc. Anže Predovnik, General Director of Adex Group and Director of BSP, comments: “BSP and ECC pave the way for the creation of a standardised European clearing solution for the Slovenian electricity market. The transfer of BSP’s clearing activity to ECC is a significant step towards a unified regional clearing solution for Adex clients, a second synergy achieved following the introduction of Intraday trading to the Serbian market last year. By leveraging the widely used clearing solution, BSP empowers its customers to manage their collateral requirements seamlessly, while accessing the vast clearing network offered by ECC.”

BSP has been providing clearing services since 2008, resulting in a robust cash flow of over 10 billion euros in 16 years. Following the transfer, BSP remains committed to the provision of clearing services to the North Macedonian and Montenegrin power exchanges, ensuring continuity and reliability.

In addition to power spot markets, ECC also clears a wide range of power future contracts for 27 countries listed on the European Energy Exchange (EEX) platform.
